"Northern Exposure" Road Trip & Concert Oct. 2

Post by LizardofIzard »

On Saturday, October 25, 2008 Exploring Izard County will be hosting its second Road Trip to be followed by a concert and presentation at the Lunenburg Community Center (Lunenburg Schoolhouse). We'll be seeking sponsorships from area businesses to both cover the costs of the event and as donations for the ongoing restoration of the Lunenburg School (it's now adorned with a brand-new roof!). Donations from participants will be welcome during both the Road Trip and the Concert and presentation.

The "Northern Exposure" Road Trip will begin in the early afternoon and will include a drive through the northwestern portion of the county and will feature stops at the Corinth Church, The Trimble House near Dolph, The Natural Bridge on Calico Creek, and the Flat Rock Church near Wideman. There will also be an alternate route for those who choose not to make the somewhat strenuous hike into the hollow where the Natural Bridge spans Calico Creek that will include a drive to City Rock Bluff, through Peppersauce Alley in Calico Rock, and by the old Schoolhouse at Calico Rock.

The Road Trip will conclude in late afternoon as both groups meet back up at Flat Rock Church.

The concert will begin in the early evening hours and will feature the solo winner of the 1st Annual Acoustic Showdown during the 2002 Arkansas Acoustic Festival at Reynolds Auditorium on the Campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Mr. Brian Driscoll, and his wife Jeanette. Brian mixes traditional folk with songs he's written in a wonderful acoustic blues style. Mr. Driscoll is also the Technical Assistance Coordinator for the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program and has agreed to also make a presentation about the program during the event. This is a perfect opportunity for those landowners who might be interested in getting some assistance in preserving their historic treasures to learn how they might be able to do it.

We'll have a post up sometime this weekend with a link to our EIC Road Trips page explaining all the details. Once we settle on our route, we'll send all participants a map.

Remember-the Road Trip events are open only to a limited number of vehicles so please let us know if you plan to participate ASAP. As we did before our "Ozarks Skoolin'" Road Trip last Spring, we'll keep a running number on our sidebar of remaining spots.

Let us know if you plan to participate via e-mail: [hillbillyizard@yahoo.com]

We're very excited about this event and hope that you will indeed inform your friends and family...as well as any landowners whom you think might be interested in hearing Brian Driscoll's presentation on historic preservation.

If you love music...if you adore Izard County...you won't want to miss out on this event!

We had a great turn-out for our event on Saturday. Over 40 people in 14 vehicles snaked their way through northwest Izard County visiting historic sites as well as the Natural Bridge spanning Calico Creek near Dolph. Later in the evening, we heard a wonderful presentation by Brian Driscoll of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program before he and his wife performed for the crowd of 71 who filled the old Lunenburg Schoolhouse near Melbourne. This was the first event to occur in the building in over 25 years!

We'll be having another event in April when we'll visit two waterfalls at Gid, Arkansas as well as driving along the River Road near Guion. We also intend to focus the Road Trip event on the Lafferty area which is the birthplace of Izard County.

We'd love to have some of you join us.
