"Boys venture onto the dike leading to the first intake tower on Jan. 23, 1947, during a time of low water. The river that day was at 2.2 feet on the gauge downtown"

Downtown Gauge data:
http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/water.ph ... 8,2,9,15,6

2.2ft (+2.2) isn't even a record, it's been as low as -6ft below the bottom limit of the gauge.

It's forecast to drop down around 1.5ft this weekend. You guys should go check it out :-)

Here's a picture from 2002 that seems to show the dike exposed above water:

I definitely plan to see it, unless someone beats me to it. Not sure when I'll make it out there though.

I was thinking with it being so low and the more of the riverbeds being exposed than normal, it would be a great time to use a metal detector. I doubt anything thing interesting would be found, but still a fun trip...

River is quite low, perhaps not low enough to expose the entire dike out to Tower 1. A more sure footed person than I might be able to make it without being swept away.

You can kind of see the ladder in the pics here.

Current river level is 0.9. Dike should be at least 1.1ft above water.

November 1966: http://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews ... .image.jpg

Discharge CFM in Nov 1966 was between 8000-9000, which is similar to the present discharge number.

Even if the river were dry as a bone, those towers are not going to have a butler answer the doorbell and show you to the parlor.

Awesome shot of the old Tower. Looks like they were repairing the little causeway? Thanks Freak!

You're all assuming one thing that you probably shouldn't... that that dike hasn't been washed out in some places by flooding over the years.

That being said I was over to the beach there on the island last weekend with the woman and we could see the dike directly behind Tower 1 is above water. So if you got a boat with a motor you could prolly land there and leave safely. But I can tell you right now, you don't want to be taking a boat over the chain of rocks right now if you can help it.

Drove by there this morning the dike is above water from the shore to half the distance to the tower.

So I walked out onto the dike this morning as far out as you can.

Only had my cell phone to take pics with though, so not the best, but not bad. Posting them soon.
