East St. Louis Stockyards

The now abandoned East St. Louis Stockyards are going to be on the auction block soon. The stockyards site has not been occupied in recent years. Founded more than 125 years ago, the St. Louis National Stockyards were the largest single employer in Southern Illinois in the 1930's. Today, farmers sell directly to beef and pork producers, virtually eliminating the need for stockyards. Rumor, and newspapers say the stalls, and some buildings will be torn down in order to make the large site more pleasing to buyers.

Doug and Rodney Dillard's (Famous Missouri Bluegrass Musicians) dad used to work at those stockyards. John Hartford talks about playing music with those guys all night when they were all kids, and then their dad would come home from the stockyards and they would all play together.
