Any cool urbex spots for a noob?

Post by iluvfatkat »

Im from around the alton/stl area and I was wondering if anyone knows of any good locations other than cottonbelt or downtown alton locations? I'm new to the forum but have only reallly been into urbex for the better half of this year. Honestly just looking for a place to take some nice pictures and hopefully get a killer view.

the decommissioned NIKE missile base in grafton is a fun and easy one. just be aware it is technically federal property and thus could lead to federal trespassing charges.

every so often you can find your way into the closed up buildings on broadway in alton and poke around. not sure how much this has changed with the Simmon's family buying everything, but it never hurts to take a stroll and see for yourself.

Hartford Castle is nearby. I recommend NOT swimming in the well mid-winter like I did.
More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.

There was a pretty cool old hotel that got turned into apartments before it's abandonment. It's by the old casino and movie theatre and there is a whole ass piano in there.

Oh and if you haven't seen the Inaugural yet, the low river levels this year are great for checking it out. Can prolly walk onto it right now.

are you talking about the stratford? i've poked around a few times just before COVID but couldn't ever find a good entrance. there was an upper window at one point but it was very visible to everyone if you were to climb up.

in the 90s it was still open and my uncle had his birthday in the skyroom just before it closed for good, so at least i did get to see it back then. apparently it was quite the place back in the 70s/80s.

the riverbender building isn't abandoned, but you can get up to the roof which has a sweet deck and a viewing area. sometimes you need a card to get in, sometimes not.
