mine with railroad tunnel

Post by peterbillionaire »

This mine has an old railroad running into it. About 50 yards inside the mine, the railroad goes into a tunnel. The tunnel is not long --- about 100 yards --- but we are short on railroad tunnels in the area, so it is gratifying to walk through it. It ends at two 12' doors, topped by barbed wire. The active part of the mine is lit up on the other side. You can see the railroad continuing on between loading docks, which reminded me of subway stops in New York.

This mine has a dome where the roof either collapsed or was dynamited. You can climb on the rubble up into the dome.

Credit to KansasCity, who first took a group of us here years ago.

Looks cool, did they just bring trains right into the mine for loading?

Aren't there a few storage mines with rail sidings into them? I think I've seen those on Local Live.

Yes, at one time trains ran into the mine. I think that they were used after the mining operation shut down and the mine was converted to underground storage and warehousing.

I have heard that, too: that some of the active warehousing mines locally have active rail lines inside. Looks like this one does. Check out the rail line disappearing into the ground.....

I would love to see a train go in. But I don't see how they would handle all of the exhaust fumes.

Maybe they just backed the train into it.

All trains are technically electric, the diesel motors power generators which in turn operate electric motors at the wheels...
