The one you describe (near the colleges) is actually the main Gates location, just around the corner from the main offices. It is actually very nice (the inside is made to look like a trolley, and it plays an amazing collection of jazz)

The scariest Gates is due North of that, on the 3000 block of Main. It’s the one that has all the ceiling fans connected by a single pulley system. I thought I was going to die in there one day. There is also one on Brooklyn that is a little sketchy.

I was wondering the same thing. The Gates on State Line is in Leawood, one of the richest parts of the KC metro. The only Gates that are in questionable areas are the ones on Brooklyn and the one in KCK. I used to go to the one near the Plaza all the time and never had any problems. I worked about 2 miles east of there and had no problems there either.

Nah, we were no where near a bad area... we were somewhere in the southern portion of KC. I believe we were actually in Leawood.

Leawood is a great place. you know a strange place, that wouldn’t think is strange is the 17th & walnut/main area. We lived at SoHo South, and at least twice a month, I’d come out & there would be chicken bones on the hood of my car, the thing is, there were no chicken places around. Churches was a mile or two away.

During the day, it’s dead, and at night, not at all sketchy ( a few homeless people sleeping in doorways, but that happens anywhere.) Yet, for some reason, chicken bones everywhere.

There's a Rib Crib in Independence right off of I-70 kind of across from Hooters. Don't know the address. Rib Crib is a great chain and I think the bbq rivals any in KC. We've at ate them in Tulsa, Springfield and all over. There's also one in the Zona Rosa, but I can't personally vouch for that one, as we haven't eaten there.

You cannot be serious. Rib Crib is boring corporate barbecue, purposely made bland so to not offend even the most easily offended palates. I prefer every other BBQ joint in Tulsa to Rib Crib, and I would definitely pick any BBQ joint in KC to Rib Crib with the possible exception of KC Masterpiece, which is the same bland BBQ for the masses that made Rib Crib such a success amongst the MOR crowd. Give me Gates or LC's anyday.

I agree... you must be kidding... Rib Crib is owned by KFC. That's like saying Taco Bell has superior Mexican food.

lol Y'all can flame away all you want. It's just my opinion. I did quite a bit of my growing up in Kansas City and have eaten at most of the BBQ places. Quicks, the old Bodee's, KC Masterpiece, Gate's...crap I can't even remember them all. IMO the Rib Crib chain is as good or better than all of them and certainly cheaper than most. Personally, I like KC Masterpiece. Sorry. Jack Stack's is pretty good but I still like the Rib Crib. "Where Bold Began" bwaaaaa!

Give me a Hereford House filet over any bbq any day of the week. Twice-baked potato too please. Unsweetened tea.

I will say this...I'd rather eat at Los Cabos than Rib Crib. I'm going to the big gunshow at Tulsa tomorrow and I may just eat there, even though it costs me a $50 every time. Those Ribs and Fajitas are excellent. How's come Weber's on 79th closed? I loved that place. The other one is too hard to turn into and is never open.

I'd eat Rib Crib over Memphis style BBQ, but if they were my only choices, I'd probably consider just going hungry.

Rib Crib is exceptionally bad, but if you don't like BBQ, than odds are pretty good you can't tell the difference. example, I can't stand seafood,so I can't tell good from bad seafood.

Hereford house is okay (I used to live at 17th and Walnut, so I ended up eating there a lot) but it is hit or miss sometimes as to quality. Also, the place smells like lemon pledge all the time, it's weird.

I still prefer Strouds to Hereford House.

I've never been to Stroud's, but I can't think that you'd not rate HH as one of the best in KC.

Likewise, I can't believe someone would go hungry before eating at Rib Crib. I knew the corporate lineage of RC. I actually don't like KFC at all and seldom eat at Taco Bell. When I eat at Long John Silver's I almost always eat chicken, though some of their seafood ain't bad. Unlike the other places, RC costs quite a bit more yet is almost always loaded with people on Saturday night. We just ate at the Broken Arrow one last night and it was packed.

Anyway, JMO.

What do you all think of the Ameristar (Station) Casino? I've only played and eaten there once, and my only regret is that I didn't bring pepper spray. But maybe they were having an inner-city outreach program that day. Viper, on the other hand, thinks that it's better than Vegas casinos and has the best buffet ever. We're debating going there this Sunday. Comments? :D
