Hall of Fame caves

Post by White Rabbit »

I had a little free time today, so I welded up a permanent ladder out of some old metal bars to replace the broken one made out of rotting wood. My ladder won't last forever either, because it'll eventually rust, but it should last a lot longer than another wooden one.

Yeah. I'd like to make a couple permanent ladders for the other cave, too, but I'd have to take measurements on it. It's so much bigger and the ladder would have to bend around the wall. I'd have to measure the second pit inside there, too.

Nice work! I had no idea you were so industrious. Those cracks in the second cave were pretty narrow, but the way you're building it it might just be thin enough to work. If you want to go measure those shafts sometime, I actually have a 200-ft ball of twine and a weight that i keep in the back of my truck to measure holes and water depths with that i think would work. I'd need to go get my other climbing rope and a tape measure, though. Let me know if want help.

Hey, if I can build a chain link fence bed, the ladder's nothing :P

I think it will, as long as I build it so that it curves right along the wall (instead of just leaning up against the top like the other ladder does).

I'll yell at you before I bring this first ladder down to the cave and we can measure the other one. It'll take me a lot longer to build it, though. I don't have enough scrap metal to make one that big right now, but I'm gonna scrounge up some long rebar sections to make the second one out of someplace.

Alright, keep in touch. Also, how are you thinking about securing the first ladder? Are you going to tie it down, or just lean it there?

I'm gonna weld a couple metal loops around the bottom of the legs, and then stake it down into the ground with a couple tent stakes (or maybe rebar if the stakes don't hold it).

Yup, we went and got it in there. Only thing, the ground ended up being a little too soft in the cave to stake the ladder down to the floor, so it's not 100% stable. I'm gonna get some lengths of cable and attach it to the wall to fix that, though.

I can't wait to see some pictures from that third level. The way Atron described it was pretty impressive. I hope you do a blog entry.
