Yeah, the city designated that old quarry as a hazardous materials dump site from about the time it was abandoned to the 1970s. Not sure what logic was used to justify it being safe for hazardous (and probably a lot of toxic) materials, but it is Springfield we're talking about. However, it wouldn't suprise me if the newspaper dumped waist ink and stuff in there.
I love the fact that it spontaniously combusted. It had been designated an EPA clean up site for a long time after that fire finally smoldered out.
