Reed Middle School

Post by paul06660 »

I recently attended an event for former Reed Middle School alumni to come visit and walk its halls before the buildings demolition later this summer. Aside from the sake of reliving old memories, I was able to investigate a few rumors regarding the building that always kept me thinking over the years.

The first rumor was that of an alleged secret passage behind the auditorium stage that supposedly contained thousands of signatures of students past. This ended up not only being true, but I was able to even go inside and snap a pic. Evidently this use to serve as a way for actors to get onto stage without being seen by the audience, and it led to what would look like a closet door to a classroom on the next level down.

Second item of investigation was the rumor of a secret room that contained the old video projectors above the second floor of seats in the rear of the same auditorium. Back when I was a student, there were stairs visible behind a door (not shown in the pic) at the top of these main stairs that led to this compartment (shown in the pic). It may very well still contain the old projectors or other items, and my curiosity about it is going even more insane now lol. Other items worth noting in the auditorium were the original 100 year old wood and steel bench seats which were really quite uncomfortable especially on hot days. Also one of the original and very old spot light devices you can see on the second level of seats.

Going into the basement, I was shocked to see the old 7th grade science room literally cut and walled in half when the elevators were installed about a decade ago. Still has a few remnants of its use but as of late was being used for storage.

The old science storage room. I was able to go in one time as a student and it contained hundreds of specimens preserved in formaldehyde.

Another shot of the room that use to contain the stairs to the old video projector compartment above the second row of seating:

The old basement cafeteria was relocated to an extension several years ago, and much of the space made available was turned into some rather interesting classrooms:

The lower level home economics classroom on the basement level of the 1990 addition. Back when I attended this use to be the shop class room, but past the aluminum and glass doors much hidden from view in the pic, we use to have state of the art Macintosh computers, an automated screen printing machine, laser experimentation station and much more back when I attended. Really a shame this area was off limits because it was where I was not only first introduced to Doom the game, but also a student had pornography hidden on one of the computers, so you can say this is where I first learned to access pornography on a digital interface, all the way back in the mid 90s lol.

I will conclude this post in the library which was one of my favorite places in the entire school. Mostly because it was morning refuge from boring studies when we would occasionally get a guest speaker. One speaker left a tremendous impression on myself and other students we have not forgotten, and that was the dangers of STD's that was presented to us one Monday morning by a Cox Health doctor we later found out had to do the presentation as a probation requirement for a DWI he had received. I will never forget his description of how genital warts were burned off someone's penis by laser, and how much gonorrhea makes it burn like hellfire when you pee. Oh the memories.

Not really much new here these days. Ive always kept lurking on UO and your blog even if I dont post much anymore. Just a lot older and a bit heavier now in my old age of 41 lol. The forums of the early 2000's, especially UO will always be an invaluable source of information, as there is just so much bad information on social media these days.

Nothing like you and cobcob fighting over rice burners in the Other forums...

Also... welcome to the "my school was demolished cause ...old" club! They razed my junior high school (7th-9th grade) a few years back, wish I coulda gotten to explore it first like you did with yours.
More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.
