Re: Best and Most Authentic Survival Shows
I agree that the educational channel as died a horrible death, but then again we only have ourselves to blame. TLC used to be an awesome learning channel, then they discovered that reality shows based around random livlihoods got way more viewers and made way more money. History channel used to actually be History, and good history too, until they discovered that become conspiracy theorist TV made way more money and got way higher ratings. Discovery, I mean I guess they are as close as we still have to a real educational channel, but they aren't exactly rigorous or exacting in their material either.

I think history channel needs to rename themselves to the P.A.S.T. (Pawns, Aliens, Swamps, and Truckers) channel. They should do this with a new reality show that follows cajun pawn shop owners who like to find alien relics in the swamps. You can watch in suspense as the relics always mysteriously disappear along with any trucker they send them on with.

They rolled out Pawnstars and I was like ha, okay yeah.
Then Hardocre Pawn came out the next year and I was like, okay yeah, we get it. Like hardcore porn but family friendly.
Then last year, I saw Pawnography on the TV guide listing. At that point I just turned the tv off and went outside.
Only watched one episode of Ancient Aliens on a long flight last summer. Clever how they mix sciency fact and conspiracy bullshit:
A.A. - "The pyramids were built nearly 5000 years ago in the harsh sands of the sahara, and nobody knows exactly how they were built."
Me: Okay, I follow...
A.A. " BUT WERE THEY BUILT BY AN EXTRATERRESTRIAL RACE TO SIGNAL A LANDING ZONE FOR THE MOTHER SHIP OF THE INTERGALACTIC RACE CALLED THE ABORTIONEKS FROM PLANET VAGITRON-9, A KNOWN HOSTILE CLAN OF...
Me: Fuck this, I'm out.
Seriously though, what ever happened to modern marvels, how it's made, anything by Ken Burns? They've really shit on themselves the past few years methinks.

RE: Best and Most Authentic Survival Shows
History Channel was on at my house 24/7. Literally. When I was home, it was on. I wasn't always watching but it was background noise and it also ensured I'd catch anything interesting. I cancelled cable about the time History channel starting sucking the teets of reality tv. And I'm glad I did because any time I see what's playing on it at a friends house or at work I get really angry at the world. Why can't there be an ACTUAL FUCKING HISTORY CHANNEL? You should see the stupid shit the ladies in my office watch. It's so dumb it makes me mad. I hate everything.
All I have right now is netflix and there's not much history stuff on there and the stuff that is on there is so dumbed down and sensationalized for the modern viewer. I'm not intelligent but holy fucking shit. How stupid do you have to be in order to fall into the target audience of most of this shit?
PBS is like the only thing on TV anymore that isn't complete shit, but unfortunately, I don't get any sort of broadcast TV. I need some stupid antenna or something. But I'm a cheapskate and won't spend money on consumer type entertainment when I could spend it on fun stuff instead.

May I recommend NOVA. I think most of NOVA is on Netflix. It is generally very good. There is also a three part series called Guns Germs and Steel that is quite good, and......that's about it.
Now if you like listening, UC Berkly has several of it's courses available online to listen to, I particularly like the course on Greek Antiquity. There is also an excellent podcast I listen to called Hardcore History presented by a man named Dan Carlton.

Youtube seems to be a great source for stuff to watch. Not only do you find full ripped off BBC documentaries that seem similar to what the History Channel used to have, but there are some pretty interesting VLOGers covering science and technology stuff that you won't find on the educational channels anymore either.
Re: Best and Most Authentic Survival Shows
Even further off the rails is TLC - The Learning Channel, originally. It's all Kardashians and completely unwatchable stuff. Not sure what anyone is supposed to learn from that.

Re: Best and Most Authentic Survival Shows
Fun Fact, did you know that TLC totally dropped the fact that their name is an acronym. It doesn't even pretend to be an educational channel anymore. It is more the DYI and reality TV sub-channel for Discovery network.

RE: Best and Most Authentic Survival Shows
If there was a show where the Kardashians survived naked in the woods for 20 days, I'd watch every episode. I wouldn't learn anything, but I'd definitely watch.

I bought this one (the Flatwave New) and get 20 some channels.SubLunar wrote:I need some stupid antenna or something. But I'm a cheapskate and won't spend money on consumer type entertainment when I could spend it on fun stuff instead.
Fox, NBC, ABC, CW, 3 or 4 PBS stations & some older show / movie channels, plus the religous & home shopping junk. Amazingly no CBS though. I even pull in a music channel.
More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.
