"Caves of Missouri" (Bretz) - RARE - download link

Post by jjjjjjjijjjjjjj »

(cross-posting this to the St. Louis forum as well... If that's against the guidelines or something, then please feel free to kill one or the other post...)

Guys,

Never posted here, but have been getting into shit I shouldn't forever and ever. First in and around Columbia, MO, but now in my adopted home town of St. Louis.

This board is great and has given me a ton of ideas, and alerted me to all kinds of cool shit over the years... I figured it was time I payed y'all back for some of that.

If you haven't heard of "THE CAVES OF MISSOURI" by J. Harlen Bretz... then hold on to your ass. This is a fucking great, great book.

It's ALSO rare as hell, and I've only seen three copies of it outside of a library... and they're always being sold by rare-books-type dudes who can look at you with a straight face and tell you they want $170 dollars for it. Fuck that. Comes up on Ebay a lot, too... never seen it cheaper than a bill. Pisses me off, too... because by the looks of some of these dudes, they're not even gonna be using the FANTASTIC amount of cool shit within.

So... I found a version of it here... But the problem is, it's clumsy and non-searchable, and that one-page-at-a-time bullshit will drive you crazy.

So I PDFed it. Made two versions... one graphics-heavy (but not searchable) and one text-based (but without graphics). I'm not asking for a medal or anything, but it took me a long goddamn time. But I would've done it for myself, anyway... and if I can help y'all out, after all you've done for me, I'm more than glad to do it.

ONE STIPULATION ONLY:
I'm no hippie about it, but I'm a big fan of the whole "information wants to be free" shit (as I imagine most of us are... given our mutual hobby). So, if you download these files, you gotta promise me you'll give it out to at LEAST one other person... Make this totally awesome book so ubiquitous on the internet and so available for anyone who wants it that I never... NEVER have to scan and digitize all of this shit again.

Go crazy folks... have a blast. Let me know what kinna shit you get into... Cheers.

Well... fuck.

I encoded it for 6.0 and up to save on filesize. Do you have the newest version?

If you do, and it still doesn't work... I'll swing for v. 5.0 and up and see if that works. Lemme know.

Anybody else having problems with it?

Well... put another way... has anyone been able to successfully download (and open) it?

Lemme know so that I can take steps to correct it, if that's what's needed... eager to do so, if necessary.

I was reading about Crystal Cave north of Springfield in your file.

"And only some Aboriginal Redskin can claim priority of entry at this place. He paid a heavy price for his claim-his skull is still here, partially embedded in flowstone."

After reading this, I remembered a tour I took there once when I was in Elementary School. I remembered how there were Indian Graves down there!!!!!

If that's the book I think it is, they also have a physical copy in the rare books section at the Library Center in Springfield. One of the guys there is the one that gave me the URL to the digital version as well. I have no idea why I didn't think to post it here.

I know some of you guys have downloaded this already, just wondering how the file looked. Is it worth the download?
