It was announced today (10-16-06) that the Air Force is "shutting down" the NORAD base inside Cheyenne Mountain. It is going into "warm standby" mode with a just a small maintance crew until needed in the future.
Remember the way it was depicted in the movie "Wargames"?
In a few years, could this be the UE "Holy Grail"?
A few fun facts:
It's 2400 feet underground.
They removed over 700,000 tons of granite during the construction.
It's got 25 ton blast doors.
The complex is actually 15 multistory underground buildings sitting on giant springs.

This has been in the works for a while, and I actually thought they had already set it in motion.
I would love to spend a weekend in that place, then come back the following 4 weekends so I could actually see everything. I wonder if they would ever give a tour of it once it is in "warm standby."

The engineering involved has to be amazing. It was built by the Corp of Engineers. My dad worked for them for 35 years as a civil engineer. He has shown me some of the pictures involved in other projects like locks and dams. I'd love to be able to go through.

As far as I know it is for real. I have been hearing talk that NORAD was going to be shutting down for a while now. I'm really not sure what advantage it would give us for "them" to think it is down, but really still have it up. Know what I mean?

The report said the main NORAD operations is being moved to nearby Peterson AFB. The general in charge was quated as saying we don't have "cold war" type enemies anymore. Our new threats are Iran and N. Korea, who both don't have the means to hit that base.
