It's an old limestone quarry mine I explored today. This place is on the Rockwood Reservation just outside of St Louis near Erueka. Pretty cool...

Pretty sweet... how far back does it go?

Not much further that what you can see in the picture, but the photo doesn't do the place justice. The ceiling in there is like 35 ft high, and I believe there are more mined areas along that same bluff that I didn't explore. Anyone that decides to go there should keep the noise level down cause there rangers on mountain bikes that patrol Rockwood Reservation. Though they wouldn't go into the mine area unless they heard you from the main trail and you'd have to be kind of loud.

Yeah been awhile since I've been there but I have a pretty funny picture of me racking my nuts on that fence. Did you go to the small natural cave while you were there? And that mine fails to compare to a few others you could go see.

Nah I havn't seen Mud Cave yet. I'll hike that trail next time.

I must admit I too was disappointed. I mean really; someone named them Cobb's "Caverns"? Please...
I went in the silica mines in Pacific with the folks that did the Mississippi pontoone boat float in July (posted at the UER forums). Those were impressive, though I wished the mines went deeper.

Where are some other cool mines around here?

One of the better places are the mines off Route 3 in Illinois right across the river. Here is an older post from Chris when he went there:

It's still partly in use but still cool to go see, and no matter how much light you bring it will still be very very dark.
