Mapping websites

Post by FiReDiVeR »

I l;ike to use google local maps because it shows you an actual map and you can switch to satellite image, but you have to know the area or address to find what you are looking for. Are there any websites that have both maps and satellite imaging by either actual location or GPS cords?

Terraserver is cool but you can not see an actual map you just get a satellite image. I would like a website that I can see both pictures and maps for the reason being you can see what you your looking for with the satellite image, but you can also switch to a map to find out how to get there by driving because I don't have an airplane in my garage to just fly to the cords and have a look see.

If you select topo on terraserver it will show maps... the problem is that the topos are all well out of date and often don't show enough contemporary landmarks.

I use expertgps software. Uploads topo maps from Terraserver and you can toggle between topo and photos. Cost is 60$ but much cheaper than topographic maps by National Geo or whoever.
They offer a free version easygps. Of course if you are not into the gps thing then it wouldn't help much.

Google Maps will accept a GPS loc. Just go to maps.google.com, and type it in in 39.000000,-94.000000 format.

Google Earth is pretty nice. I find myself regularly flipping between WorldWind, Gmaps, Gearth and ExpertGPS.

I wrote a program that lets you switch between them pretty easily, and keep your same GPS location. It also has a built-in Gmaps viewer. I usually start with that, find the area I'm interested in, press the "Update Location" button, then choose to open that point in either Gearth or WorldWind, depending on if I want to look at oldish satellite photos and topos, or recent satellite photos.

I wrote it in .net 2.0, so if anyone is interested, let me know and I can give you a copy.
